The Importance of Playing Hooky

Today, I played hooky and it felt great! My hands never touched a flower stem and I made no floral deliveries. Instead I celebrated the first official day of summer with my two girls and boy, was it fun! We took in a Washington Ballet performance of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We sipped lemonade and knoshed on French fries while discussing the crazy things boys say (including their own father). I tried on and bought a dress far too loud for my age, and we sang Katie Perry songs in the car on the way home. By mid-afternoon, signs of ten-year-old surliness reminded me that the days are fleeting until I lose Julianne to the dark side of puberty. Little Elizabeth grew two inches this year and her once toothless smile is quickly filling in with permanent teeth. There is always a time and a place to play hooky. Choose the day wisely and hold it in your heart and hand lest you forget what it’s like to be a free spirit.
